NARRATIVE SENSATION

Last year, Newark Public Schools completed a first of its kind project in American educational history, publishing a collection of 58 student stories centered around themes of immigration and identity. This book was celebrated at every level of government, changing the world and the lives of the student-authors.

Now, we would like to help share stories of a new group of students from across the entire country. This new book, called FOR WANT OF THINGS LIKE THESE, will tell stories of POVERTY, INEQUALITY, and CLASS, straight from America's most vulnerable.

WHAT IS YOUR STORY?

Stories don’t have to be ABOUT poverty or class, but should showcase some narrative around a theme. Possible starting ideas can be: healthcare, disease, first jobs, housing, food insecurity, going to college, unemployment, low wages, lack of job opportunities, conflict, poor infrastructure, lack of government support, social exclusion, juvenile delinquency, crime, substance abuse, inequality, parental negligence, life in urban or rural environments.

NARRATIVE ARC

The best stories will focus on specific incidents rather than a simple list of things that happened. They will have a narrative arc in which readers can witness the transformation of our students.
